Monochrome
From zero presence to premium positioning in the smart home market
Brand identity and website that took a Japanese smart home startup from zero presence to premium positioning, landing high-end architects and clients before their first product shipped.
Live site
monochrome.soMonochrome came to us before they had a product on the market, a brand, or a website. They were building something ambitious: beautifully engineered smart home systems, solar panels, and energy management tools designed to integrate into the architecture of a home, not sit on top of it. The challenge was that their target audience (high-end architects, premium housing brands, design-conscious homeowners) would never take them seriously without a visual identity that matched the quality of what they were building. And because their technology touches the most intimate parts of daily life (heating, lighting, energy, security) trust wasn't optional. It was the entire starting point.
We designed the full brand identity from scratch: logo, visual language, creative direction, and a website built to evolve alongside the company. We led the creative strategy and design, and built the front end in Next.js with complex GSAP animations to give the site the interactive, premium feel the brand demanded. The back end ran on KeystoneJS, giving Monochrome's team full control over content as new products launched. The process was fast and iterative. We started with a recruiting-focused landing page to establish an initial presence, then expanded into a full client-facing site, adding pages and rethinking product presentation as the company shipped new hardware.
The result was a brand that opened doors Monochrome couldn't have knocked on otherwise. High-profile collaborations with architects like SUEP., Suppose Design Office, and Schemata followed. The site consistently scored above 90 on Lighthouse, and the company's own team reported that the design and web presence were directly responsible for landing clients at the premium end of the market, exactly where they needed to be. For a company asking people to trust them with the inner workings of their home, looking the part from day one wasn't a nice-to-have. It was the whole strategy.
This project was delivered with a team through upcoming.studio, a design studio I co-founded.
